Costa Brava

The stretch of coast that leads from Barcelona toward the French border, literally translate into ‘the rugged coast’ and was one of the first to see mass tourism in Spain. But while some locations are more developed, others are almost unspoilt; from the rough beauty of the Cap de Creus to the picturesque town of Cadaques, which was chosen by Salvador Dali who found inspiration in its whitewashed houses. The passionate Catalan artist also left an incredible museum full of his art in nearby Figueres, which will leave you breathless. The region’s capital, Girona is a medieval jewel – so beautifully preserved that it acted as a fitting live set for many of Game of Thrones’ iconic scenes.

  • See and Do

    • Girona, the Jewel of Catalunya
    • The city of Girona is absolutely spectacular. Set along the Onyar its colourful houses along the riverfront remind visitors of Florence. Its centre is a time capsule to medieval times, with its stone buildings, bulky city walls and lofty porticos. In fact Girona’s heart is so well preserved that it’s been chosen as the backdrop of TV series Game of Thrones.

    • On Dali’s Trail
    • Artist Salvador Dali was born in this part of the world and in his home town of Figueres visitors are treated to his impressing house-museum, a superb purpose-built extravagant complex housing a huge collection of his works, plus some insight on his colourful & intense artistic and personal life. Check also his other house in Port Lligat, near Cadaqués.

    • Wilderness in Cap de Creus
    • The Cap the Creus is a rocky promontory sticking out in the Mediterranean. Here nature is king and the coast unspoilt. Find a desert cove to swim in the sparkling waters or walk in absolute wilderness. Here some ancient monasteries tell amazing stories. The town on Cadaqués is without doubt one of the most picturesque in Catalunya with its sugar cube houses and red roofs.

    • Tossa de Mar
    • Here you will find a modern seaside town next to a spectacular walled old town that stretches all the way to the wide beach. It’s one of the best preserved in the region and offers spectacular views over the coastline, which between here and Sant Feliu de Guixols is particularly beautiful.

    • Villages, Ruins & Beaches
    • In the central section of the Costa Brava are some spectacular beaches, especially the small coves near the charming villages of Begur and Palafrugell – truly picture postcard! For those into ancient history there are imposing Roman and Greek ruins at Empuries and even more ancient treasures at Ullastret.
