Gran Canaria

An island that is dubbed ‘The Continent in Miniature’ – and rightly so! For there is more variety on this island than one can possibly pack in a holiday, from snowy peaks to golden sand dunes, from leafy coasts to rugged rocky deserts. It is also one of the world’s most LGBT-friendly hotspots, with millions of gay tourists flocking to its year-round sun-drenched southern coast every year, attracted by innumerable events that take place in and around the (in)famous Yumbo Centrum.

Gaytway Guide to Gran Canaria

  • Part of the Gaytway purpose is to connect LGBT+ travellers with people, places and experiences. Our specially curated guides introduce you to what's on offer in each destination; where to stay and rest tired weary travellers feet and rejuvinate in between exploring sights and wonders, as well as where you can eat, drink and while the days and night away.

And because we too love travelling and exploring, and know you can never know everything about somewhere, we would love to hear from you about that great place to stay, the new and hip bar or club in town or ways to meet and connect with the local LGBT+ community. That's why we make it easy for you to send us your own personal recommendations!

    • Climb to the Pico de las Nieves
    • The volcano in the centre of Gran Canaria is high enough to see quite a lot of snow in the winter, in fact in the past the locals used to press the snow in circular walled enclosures for use in the summer months. Today the road that climbs the Pico is a spectacular drive and the views pretty breath-taking, all the way to Tenerife and beyond.

    • The Roque Nublo
    • Also inland is the Roque Nublo which is an isolated massive volcanic rock that was formed by an eruption around 4.5 million years ago. It’s 67 metres high and it is quite impressive, standing on top of a tall hill. Again, stunning views are ensured.

    • The (in)famous Yumbo Centre
    • It is not an exaggeration to say that 99% of all the gay venues on the island are located here, in this 1980s shopping mall and its immediate vicinity. But love or hate it, the Yumbo is super-easy to navigate and the fact that all bars & clubs are here means that one can go from one to another in minutes. Convenience at its best.

    • The famous Dunes
    • The Dunes of Maspalomas are a huge extent of golden sand along the southern coast, closely resembling the Sahara, though the origins are not related to the huge desert just across the sea. The dunes are also famous for being one of the most known and busiest cruising areas in Europe, as well as for being home to one of the best known gay beaches, right at the southernmost tip of the island.

    • Las Palmas & Las Canteras Beach
    • The Playa de las Canteras is a huge stretch of golden sand located right in the heart of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. More than 3 kilometres long, it is a popular choice for tourists as well as residents of the city and is protected by a natural reef called La Barra. Gays tend to prefer the northern side of the beach.
