Sitges

Sitges combines the laid back attitude of Barcelona with a lovely beachside setting. Its long promenade and the golden sandy beach have been a favourite spot for the LGBT community for decades, even when Spain was under the oppression regime of General Franco. In more recent years Sitges has emerged not just as a summer destination but as a year-round magnet for tourism, thanks to the many events that punctuate its calendar.

    • Gay-watch at the Beach
    • The most popular gay beach in Sitges, Playa de la Bassa Rodona, is located directly opposite the Calipolis Hotel and as such it’s the easiest to get to – here it’s where the hottest beach bodies go. There are sunbeds for hire, bars, showers, massages, etc. At night the stretch of beach from here and for a few hundred metres in a southwest direction is very cruisy, especially after 2AM.

    • Go Nude At Balmins Beach
    • About fifteen minutes walk along the coast north-east from the Church, past the San Sebastian beach is the Balmins Beach which is one of the three nudist beaches in Sitges. The gay section is the town-end. You need to bring your towels and drinks as there is no beach service.

    • A Hike On ‘The Rocks’
    • For those who fancy a hike in search of a more remote location, the nudist rocky cove of Playa del Muerto is situated a good twenty minutes walk (over a steep rocky promontory) from the end of the seafront promenade. Do not be tempted to walk along the railway track and through the tunnel as the trains whizz past at over 140 Km/h on this stretch. There is a small chiringuito (kiosk) serving some refreshments and light meals near the beach and the woodland behind the beach itself is very cruisy during the daytime hours.

    • Discover The Bohemian Noucentrism
    • Until the late 1800s Sitges was a quiet fishermen’s village: but when the famous Catalan painter Santiago Rusiñol set base here the town started assuming an increased ‘artsy’ character. Even in the Franco years, and specially in the 1960s, Sitges became a centre for counterculture. Since the 1910s many wealthy Barcelonians built their residences here and the city started spreading along its seafront and then inland. Around the church are some beautiful buildings, in particular the artistic and monumental complex of Maricel, built between 1910 and 1918 by the engineer and artist Miquel Utrillo and commissioned by the magnate, philanthropist and American collector Charles Deering. Maricel is one of the first major example of “Noucentisme".

    • Discover The History Of Bacardi
    • Sitges has an interesting connection with the world-famous Bacardi rum. Facundo Bacardi, the founder of the iconic brand was born in Sitges and emigrated to Cuba in 1830, like many other Spaniards who are referred to as los americanos. Today the old market complex, in itself a fine Noucentrist building just behind the Sant Bartolomeu and Santa Tecla church, houses the Casa Bacardi Museum (www.casabacardi.es), where you will be able to learn about the history of Señor Bacardi and his American fortunes.

    • A Sunset Walk Around The Imposing Church
    • Sitges has a very ancient history, however the oldest surviving part of town is nestled around the church of Sant Bartolomeu and Santa Tecla, built on a beautiful spot overlooking the beach in the seventeenth century. Have a walk at sunset when the old stones gleam in the golden light.

    • Have An Evening Drink In The Plaça Industria And Calle Montroig
    • On summer evenings this area of Sitges is absolutely buzzing. Sit at one of the cafes and soak the atmosphere, watch people going by and you may be lucky enough to catch a performance by the world-famous Lady Diamond, a SItges institution.

    • Spot The Yachts At Aiguadolç
    • Sitges' main port is called Port d’Aiguadolç and is located just to the east of the Balmins Beach. This is a newly built area but very picturesque, with nice restaurants and boutiques along the main strip (Passeig del Port). There are boats of various sizes, including some spectacular yachts.
