Volcanic in nature, like the other Canary Islands, here is where visitors can really feel the power of the Earth at work. Dominated by the towering Teide volcano, often dramatically snow-capped, the island offers heaps of opportunities for enjoyment. Some visitors prefer the flatter south of the island, where most of the tourist resorts are based and indeed most of the nightlife. But there is an awful lot more to Tenerife! The rugged north coast is simply beautiful and inland you will find plenty of surprises, from lunar-like volcanic landscapes to tropical forest walks and bijou colonial villages. And let’s not forget the famous Tenerife Carnival, which is second only to Rio!

LGBT life is a lot more low-key than in Gran Canaria, but there are quite a few gay venues to the south of the Island, in the resort of Playa de las Americas. But being this Spain, the locals’ attitude to gay people is very relaxed and visitors should not encounter any issues while here.

Gaytway Guide to Tenerife

  • Part of the Gaytway purpose is to connect LGBT+ travellers with people, places and experiences. Our specially curated guides introduce you to what's on offer in each destination; where to stay and rest tired weary travellers feet and rejuvinate in between exploring sights and wonders, as well as where you can eat, drink and while the days and night away.

And because we too love travelling and exploring, and know you can never know everything about somewhere, we would love to hear from you about that great place to stay, the new and hip bar or club in town or ways to meet and connect with the local LGBT+ community. That's why we make it easy for you to send us your own personal recommendations!

Tell us about it and we'll feature it here.

    • Up the Teide
    • The highest point in Spain, Mount Teide is a volcano and is surrounded by endless suggestive Mars-like landscapes, that are a protected area. You can drive up to a point from where you can get a cable car climbing up to 3,555 metres high - very close to the mountain’s summit. Note that you climb the volcano you need a (free) permit that needs to be obtained in advance. It’s also recommended to buy the cable car tickets online.

    • Drive along the North Coast
    • The northern coast is rugged and often you can clearly spot the ancient lava flows. The village of Garachico was engulfed in lava by an eruption in 1706. Today it is one of Tenerife’s most popular day-trip destinations, where swimming in rock pools hewn from the lava is a unique experience. The flora is lush and particular in this part of the island and creates an almost prehistoric landscape.

    • Colonial-style Villages
    • There are some beautiful villages all over the island, for instance Taganana, with its cobbled streets and its early 16th-century church, Arico Nuevo, a perfectly preserved 18th-century walled village of uniformly white and green houses, and many others.

    • Beaches for every taste
    • There are so many beaches on the island that visitors will be spoilt for choice. From sandy El Medano in the South to Las Teresitas, near the capital Santa Cruz. Playa Jardin is an incredibly beautiful beach that owes a huge debt to the vision of Canary Island’s artist Cesar Manrique, the man who designed its unique landscape. The northern part of the island has smaller coves with their own charm. You will find many gay nudist beaches as well, such as Playa de la Tejita, Playa Los Callados in the South and Playa del Pozo near Puerto de la Cruz.

    • Theme Park Galore
    • There are quite a few theme parks in Tenerife, but a couple of remarkable ones are Siam Park – a water park with a Siamese theme and Loro Parque - a 13.5-hectare zoo located on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz where it houses an extensive and diverse reserve of animal and plant species.
  • Agua de Coco

With a nice terrace overlooking the Ocean at San Telmo, Agua de Coco serves delicious Brazilian & tropical cocktails

    Butterfly Club

A new gay disco bar, opened in late 2014, with a cruising space as well.

A disco bar in Puerto de La Cruz with cabaret shows and DJs.

    Music Hall Tavern

Dinner & Drag Show. Mrs T and her cast at the Music Hall Tavern have been entertaining audiences across the Canary Islands for over 20 years.
