Rotterdam

The Netherlands’ second biggest city is one of the most happening places in Europe right now. A bustling industrial and commercial port, divided by the Nieuwe Maas shipping waterway, Rotterdam is excitingly modern, diverse, cosmopolitan and most of all extremely trendy. Almost entirely rebuilt after the destructions of WWII, the city has reinvented itself and a beacon for futuristic architectures, such as the famous Erasmusbrug, a dramatic bridge that has been dubbed ‘the Swan’. The city also offers innumerable bars and restaurants and a pretty hectic nightlife. As for the rest of The Netherlands, Rotterdam is a very open and liberal city and LGBT people are very welcome everywhere. Most of the gay bars and venues are located in the centre of the city.

    • Housing Fantastic
    • One of Rotterdam’s iconic landmarks is the Overblaak development. Designed by Piet Blom and built between 1978 and 1984, this curious housing development is famous for a pencil-shaped tower, and the 45-degree-tilted, cube-shaped apartments on hexagonal pylons.

    • Museum City
    • Rotterdam has some very fine museums. At the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen there’s a permanent collection spanning all eras of Dutch and European art, including superb old masters. If you’re more for modern art, the Witte de With, Centre for Contemporary Art features experimental exhibitions, installations and events.

    • The Euromast
    • View the city from this tower, which was originally built for the Floriade exhibition of 1960. The Euromast is 185 metres high and offers unparalleled 360-degree views of Rotterdam from its observation deck, which you can reach by a lift in 30 seconds. On the deck is also a bistro/brasserie.

    • Oude Kerk Charlois
    • The Pilgrims Fathers prayed for the last time here at the Oude Kerk before leaving the Netherlands for America aboard the Speedwell on 22 July 1620. The Speedwell was leaky and rickety so once in England, they transferred to the Mayflower – and then proceeded to America.
