Bars

The pub is an institution of the British culture and those serving the LGBT community have for many years represented safe and accepting places where people could meet and socialise. In the last few years many of them have sadly closed their doors, pushed out of business by astronomical rents and also by the advent of the internet and the apps, who have radically changed the landscape. Outrage was expressed when The Black Cap, an institution of the London LGBT scene since the mid-60s, closed to be redeveloped into flats and The Vauxhall Tavern was saved by being declared a Heritage Building.

However there are still plenty of successful LGBT bars & pubs in London, in fact far too many to mention: many still have a full roster of drag and cabaret performances.

  • Soho may not be as queer as it once was and many LGBT venues have closed or are being turned into luxury flats, to the outcry of the last few Bohemians living in the area, but it is still the very heart of London’s LGBT bar scene, especially along Old Compton Street, where the buzz on a weekend night is irresistible.
